The Red Quest is a fast-paced, light-hearted true story of one man's mission to visit every country of the former Soviet Union.
Along the way, the author samples fermented mare's milk in Kazakhstan, gets chased by hounds in Kiev, is detained by the police in Kyrgyzstan, travels through a snow blizzard between Armenia and Georgia, and gets mugged by a pensioner in Tajikistan. Oh, and he also takes a side trip to a genuine breakaway state where he is almost beaten up in a border hut. All in the name of The Red Quest!
Constantly berated by his friend for wanting to go to 'Turnipland', the Red Quest is a journey spanning half the world from Western Europe to the edge of China! And he is armed only with a pocket full of roubles and a turnip masher.
Join Jason Smart as he travels along the Red Quest through Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary, Russia, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Poland, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and East Germany!

The Red Quest Travels through 22 former Soviet Republics eBook Jason Smart
This book is a real gem and must read for any lover of travel and history. Jason opens doors that most of us wouldn't even dare knock on. This book is an account of his travels through former soviet-era countries which range from the obscure to the downright unknown. The pace of his account is fast, and the scenes are brought to life by the authors acute ability to capture a slice of life in places like a jailhouse in Kyrgyzstan, a torture museum in Bratislava, or market in an breakaway country east of Moldova. You'll laugh when you read about the crazy budget airlines filled with hordes of passengers and you'll cringe when you visit little known places that hosted big-time atrocities. This book is an amazing first hand account of life and history in parts of the world where very little is actually known. Be warned, once you pick up "The Red Quest" you will not put it down until it's finished: it's that good!.Product details

The Red Quest Travels through 22 former Soviet Republics eBook Jason Smart Reviews
I have always been fascinated by countries that came under this bracket and the easy and most approachable way in which this is written is not only easy to read but compelling.....have now read it 5 times and each time just makes me want to pack my bags and go!
I enjoyed this book not only because I would love to do the same "quest" as Jason but also I liked the light hearted approach interspersed with historical snippets. The book allows the reader a brief taster of each country visited and Jason's writing style is engaging; one can really imagine being in the places he visited and doing the things he describes. One slight criticism is that there are grammatical errors which in my opinion should have been picked up before publishing. I also felt a few photographs and a map of the region would have enhanced the experience further. But overall a worthwhile read.
I enjoyed reading of countries in the former Eastern bloc some of which I know virtually nothing about, but each visit is very short and usually just to the capital so you don't get that much sense of place or the people who live there.
Written in a friendly and inviting style, always interesting. Smart's visits to each country were short, mostly the Capitol cities, but very illuminating. I will buy more of his books!
A solid bit of travel writing which gave me a 'feel' for the experiences in each of the 22 countries. It left me with a yen for a sequel on the countries carved from the former Yugoslavia.
As somebody that is fascinated with the Soviet Union and Cold War and having travelled throughout East Europe, I was happy when I stumbled upon this book. I am thoroughly glad I bought it. This book is a very light-hearted and enjoyable read. I enjoyed reading about the author's experiences in many of the same cities that I have visited. The author's writing style is very inviting and has inspired me to try to complete my own Red Quest.
I have spent 8 months in the former Soviet countries and it was interesting for me to compare my feelings about those countries with somebody else's. Just finished reading the book (couldn't even stop in a middle of it!). Jason Smart brings so much realistic and priceless information about all ex-USSR and ex-communist party countries with plenty of humor. Reading his book is like listening your old friend about his adventures. When I traveled to Russia, the first question I was asked at Domodedovo airport was exactly the same - "Zis your first time in Russia?" Russians (and people from ex-USSR countries) do things a little differently and understand things a little differently, too. If you want to understand how they think - read this book! If you want to know which places to visit when you are there - take your with you, carry it with you all the time and use Jason's book as a helpful and realistic guide.
The book is an extremely enjoyable read and very helpful guide!
